Essential Puppy Gear Checklist

July 27, 2026

The must-have gear to set your new puppy up for success—curated by a professional trainer.

Essential Puppy Gear Checklist

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting—and a little overwhelming. The right gear removes the guesswork and sets your puppy up for success from day one. Here's what we recommend, and why each item matters.

Management & Safety

A Properly Sized Crate

Your puppy should be able to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably—but no bigger. Too much space invites potty accidents in the corner. For Frenchies, a 24"–30" crate with a divider is ideal so it can grow with your pup.

Baby Gates & a Playpen

These create your puppy's safe zone. A playpen connected to an open crate is our favorite setup—your puppy gets freedom without access to cords, shoes, or hidden corners.

A 15-Foot Long Line

Not a retractable leash—a fixed 15-foot line. It gives your puppy room to explore outdoors while keeping them safe and within your control. Essential for early recall work.

Feeding & Potty

Puzzle Feeder or Snuffle Mat

Feeding meals out of a bowl is a missed opportunity. Puzzle feeders and snuffle mats tire out your puppy's brain and slow down fast eaters.

Enzyme Cleaner

Regular cleaners don't remove the pheromones that draw puppies back to the same accident spot. An enzymatic cleaner is non-negotiable for potty training.

Chew & Play

A Variety of Chew Textures

Puppies explore with their mouths. Stock Kongs (stuff and freeze them!), teething rings, and soft plush toys. Rotate them so your puppy always has a "legal" chew option.

High-Value Treats

Tiny, soft, smelly treats—think boiled chicken, hot dog bits, or freeze-dried liver. These are your currency for training and socialization.
