Impulse Control Games to Play at Home

Fun, simple games that teach your puppy self-control and focus.

Impulse Control Games to Play at Home

Impulse control is the foundation of good manners. A puppy who can wait, look to you, and make good choices grows into a calm, reliable adult dog. These games teach those skills—no special equipment required.

Game 1: The Name Game

Say your puppy's name once. When they look at you, mark with a cheerful "Yes!" and give a treat. If they don't look, make a kissy noise or tap the floor, then reward the look. Repeat throughout the day in different rooms.

Game 2: "It's Yer Choice" (Cookie in the Hand)

Hold a treat in your closed fist. Your puppy will lick and nibble—wait. The instant they pull back or stop trying, mark "Yes!" and open your hand to let them eat it. This teaches that backing off, not pushing in, earns the reward.

Game 3: Wait at the Bowl

Have your puppy sit. Place the bowl down slowly. If they move toward it, lift it back up. Only release them to eat with a release word like "okay." This builds patience around food.

Game 4: Door Zen

Before opening any door for a walk or outing, wait for your puppy to sit and look at you. Opening the door is the reward for calm behavior—not something that happens automatically.

Game 5: The Settle on the Mat

Toss a towel or small mat on the floor. Reward your puppy for any interaction—looking at it, stepping on it, sitting on it. Build up until they happily go to the mat and relax. This becomes a portable calm spot anywhere.

Tips for Success

  • Keep sessions to 3–5 minutes. Short and frequent beats long and rare.
  • Always let your puppy win. End on a success.
  • Use real-life rewards (door opening, food, play) alongside treats.

Impulse control is the secret to a polite adult dog. Book a virtual session to level up your training.
