The Puppy Biting Survival Guide

Why puppies bite and how to redirect the behavior with positive methods.

The Puppy Biting Survival Guide

Puppy biting is normal—and it's still maddening. Those needle teeth hurt! Here's how to redirect the behavior without damaging your relationship or your puppy's trust.

Why Puppies Bite

Puppies explore the world with their mouths. They also bite to initiate play, when they're overtired, and during teething. Biting isn't aggression—it's communication. Our job is to teach them a better way to use that mouth.

The Redirect Method

  1. Keep a toy within arm's reach at all times. When your puppy mouths you, immediately offer the toy.
  2. If they switch back to your skin, play ends. Calmly step over a baby gate or walk away for 30 seconds.
  3. Return and re-engage with a toy. They learn: teeth on skin = fun stops; teeth on toy = fun continues.

Watch for Overtiredness

Most "bad biting" episodes happen when your puppy is exhausted. If biting escalates into frantic landshark mode, it's nap time. Put them in the crate with a chew toy and let them sleep.

What Doesn't Work

  • Yelping or yelling can actually rile puppies up or scare them.
  • Holding their mouth shut damages trust and doesn't teach an alternative.
  • Pinching or flicking teaches your puppy that hands are unpredictable and unsafe.

The Long Game

Consistency from everyone in the household is the only thing that works. Make sure kids and guests follow the same rules. Within a few weeks of consistent redirection, the biting fades as your puppy learns the rules of play.
