Sound Desensitization Playlists for Puppies
Many adult dog fears—thunderstorms, fireworks, vacuums, doorbells—trace back to a lack of early sound exposure. The fix is simple, gentle, and best started in your puppy's first weeks home.
The Method: Pair Every Sound With Good Things
Play new sounds at a very low volume while your puppy is happily eating a meal or playing. Gradually increase the volume over days and weeks as long as your puppy stays relaxed. The sound predicts something wonderful—never something scary.
Sounds to Introduce
- Household: vacuum, blender, dishwasher, washing machine, hair dryer
- Doors & alerts: doorbell, knocking, alarm beep, phone ringing
- Outdoors: thunder, fireworks, traffic, sirens, trains
- People: babies crying, kids playing, crowds, dogs barking in the distance
- Events: party poppers, balloons popping
How to Build a Playlist
- Search YouTube or Spotify for "puppy sound desensitization" compilations.
- Start with one sound category at a time.
- Play at the lowest audible volume during mealtime.
- Increase volume gradually over 7–10 days per sound.
- Watch your puppy—if they stop eating, look worried, or try to leave, the volume is too high.
What Not to Do
- Don't flood your puppy with loud sounds suddenly.
- Don't force them to "face their fear."
- Don't reward fearful behavior by over-coddling; instead, lower the volume and rebuild.
